Description

Prepares trainees to safely drive a belt loader to an aircraft, enter the ERA with discipline, and align precisely under guidance. The lesson trains route selection, mandatory brake testing, and coordination with a guide person to prevent incidents.

Lesson Overview

  1. 1Apron assessment and route selection
  2. 2Approach toward the aircraft and brake testing
  3. 3Response to missed brake test simulation
  4. 4Driving under direction of the guide person
  5. 5Positioning and alignment at the cargo hold

Skills Acquired

  • Assess the apron and confirm a safe, obstruction-free route
  • Perform a proper brake test before ERA entry
  • Follow guide person hand signals accurately in real time
  • Maintain control at low speeds and safe stopping distances

Lesson Procedure

  • The trainee begins with an environment and path check, confirming the aircraft beacon light is off, the route is clear, and the correct path is selected around the wing.
  • After releasing the parking brake and shifting into forward gear, the trainee follows the designated path; deviations trigger a rewind and optional assistance.
  • At the ERA line, the trainee performs a full brake test before crossing. Skipping the brake test results in a simulated accident, followed by a rewind and corrective feedback.
  • Once moving closer to the aircraft, coordination with a guide person is required. Movement begins only when a guide is present, and the trainee must respond correctly to attention, stop, and directional signals. Ignoring a stop command triggers an injury simulation and rewind.
  • For final positioning, the trainee follows guide signals to align with the cargo hold. Collisions or misalignment trigger feedback and rewind.
  • After receiving the guide’s final OK, the trainee shifts to neutral, sets the parking brake, and completes the parking procedure.
  • The lesson concludes with a success summary confirming all objectives have been met.

Safety Scenarios & Learnings

Learning Outcome

Reinforces mandatory brake testing by simulating the consequences of skipped checks.

Learning Outcome

Emphasizes attentiveness to ground guidance to prevent injury or equipment damage.

Learning Outcome

Teaches proper routing and spatial awareness by showing the risks of driving under the wing.

Learning Outcome

Demonstrates the importance of maintaining safe distance and awareness around ground support equipment.

Learning Outcome

Highlights the need to follow designated driving lanes to avoid hazards and operational disruptions.

Learning Outcome

Reinforces caution and slow approach near aircraft, showing the severe consequences of impact.

Learning Outcome

Simulates a critical safety violation, stressing constant vigilance and personnel during operations.

Learning Outcome

Issues an audio warning and then rewind; reinforcing the need for a straight alignment when approaching.
