Description

This lesson trains the final phase of pushback operations, focusing on equipment disconnection coordination and taxi clearance. Trainees practice, safely disconnecting ground equipment, and providing the final all-clear signal to authorize aircraft taxi. The training emphasizes proper disconnection order, visual communication with the cockpit, and maintaining safe distances from engine danger zones throughout the process.

Lesson Overview

  1. 1Receive engine start completion confirmation and announce equipment disconnection to the cockpit
  2. 2Disconnect ground equipment in strict sequence: towbar from tractor, towbar from nose gear, steering bypass pin, and then headset bluetooth transmitter.
  3. 3Position on the side of the aircraft and provide visual confirmation of steering bypass pin removal to the cockpit
  4. 4Give the final all-clear hand signal to authorize aircraft taxi
  5. 5Repeat the communication sequence in advanced mode, selecting correct phraseology from multiple options

Skills Acquired

  • Coordinate equipment disconnection with the cockpit using correct phraseology
  • Execute the equipment disconnection sequence without omissions
  • Provide visual confirmation of steering bypass pin removal and final all-clear signals to authorize taxi
  • Maintain safe distances from running engines during all phases of operations

Lesson procedure

  • The lesson starts on the taxiway centerline with the pushback maneuver complete, parking brake set, and engines running; the cockpit confirms the engine start.
  • The cockpit is informed using about the start of the equipment disconnection process via standard communication phraseology.
  • The trainee must lift the towbar slightly before disconnecting it from tractor's front coupling, and authorize the tractor driver to reverse.
  • While the driver repositions the tractor, the trainee removes the towbar head safety pin, pulls the locking lever upward, and reinserts the safety pin to secure the open position.
  • The pushback driver takes over and detaches the towbar from the nose gear, attaches it to the tractor's rear tow hitch, and drives to a safe position away from the aircraft.
  • The trainee removes the steering bypass pin from the nose gear, before disconneting the headset and closing the access panel.
  • Moving to the left side of the aircraft, the trainee faces the cockpit and holds the steering bypass pin up high, showing the aircraft's steering system is reactivated, until the pilot confirms.
  • After confirmation, the final all-clear signal is given; the pilot acknowledges and the aircraft begins to taxi.
  • The communication sequence is repeated in advanced mode where correct phraseology must be selected from multiple options.

Safety Scenarios & Learnings

Learning Outcome

Danger warning; emphasizes maintaining safe distances from running engines throughout all phases of operation.

Learning Outcome

Warning and correction; demonstrates that the lever must be held and moved to neutral by hand rather than being released.

Learning Outcome

Warning; reinforces that only after the pilot acknowledges, the hand may be taken down.

Learning Outcome

Correction; highlighting that standard aviation phraseology is required for communication.
