Description

This lesson trains pushback headset communication through a guided speaking exercise covering the complete communication sequence from radio check to equipment disconnection. Trainees speak each required phrase out loud with a practice partner simulating the cockpit crew's responses, building accurate standard phraseology and familiarity with the real communication rhythm. The training focuses on mastering the correct sequence and phrasing to prevent miscommunication in live pushback operations.

Lesson Overview

  1. 1Introduction to the guided speaking format and microphone input system
  2. 2Perform pre departure radio check and pushback setup clarification with the cockpit
  3. 3Communicate safety checks, pushback commencement and engine start clearance
  4. 4Inform the practice partner about the final position, equipment disconnecttion
  5. 5Option to repeat the communication sequence for additional practice

Skills Acquired

  • Learn standard pushback phraseology by speaking to a practice partner
  • Execute the full communication sequence from pre-departure confirmations to final disconnect in the correct order
  • Recognize the correct timing for issuing engine start clearance during pushback to prevent unsafe engine starts
  • Understand the safety significance of each communication phase for preventing miscommunication in live pushback operations

Lesson Procedure

  • The lesson starts by introducing the communication practice setup: the trainee is at the gate before departure starts, and must practice headset communication while waiting for a pushback slot. A colleague acts as a practice partner and plays the cockpit crew role.
  • A brief voice recognition tutorial walks through the microphone mechanic: the trainee speaks a sentence, which is recorded and automatically evaluated.
  • The practice partner then initiates a radio check, and the trainee responds with the standard confirmation. Next, the trainee communicates the pushback configuration and works through pre-departure checks, including signaling readiness for pushback.
  • The practice partner simulates receiving pushback clearance. The trainee requests parking brake release confirmation, announces pushback commencement, and gives the command for engine start.
  • Simulating arrival at the final position, the trainee requests parking brake set, receives engine start completion confirmation from the practice partner, and announces disconnecting of pushback equipment.
  • The sequence concludes with a summary of all completed phrases and the option to repeat the training.
