Description

This lesson trains the correct detachment sequence after pushback: lowering the towbar wheels, releasing the towbar from the tractor’s front coupling, detaching it from the nose gear dummy, and finally removing the steering bypass pin to restore steering. The exercise emphasizes doing the steps in the correct order to prevent damage, injury, or leaving the steering system disabled.

Lesson Overview

  1. 1Lower the towbar wheels and lift the towbar slightly to create clearance
  2. 2Open the tractor’s front coupling and create clearance between tractor and towbar
  3. 3Unlock the towbar head, detach it from the nose gear dummy, and move the towbar away
  4. 4Remove the steering bypass pin to restore the hydraulic steering system

Skills Acquired

  • Follow the correct detachment sequence
  • Use the towbar hand pump correctly to lower wheels and lift the towbar slightly
  • Open the tractor’s front coupling correctly and ensure safe clearance before nose gear detachment
  • Detach the towbar head safely, move the towbar clear, and remove the steering bypass pin correctly

Lesson procedure

  • The lesson starts with the trainee standing to the side of the coupled tractor–towbar–dummy setup, with clear view of all equipment.
  • The trainee walks to the towbar hand pump, and turns the lift pump switch to the right so the wheels descend.
  • Once the wheels meet resistance, the trainee pumps with the left hand to lift the towbar slightly, creating clearance for uncoupling at the tractor.
  • The trainee moves to the tractor’s front coupling lever, and pulls the lever to open the front coupling.
  • The tractor is moved back a short distance to create clearance so the trainee can safely continue the detaching process at the nose gear dummy.
  • The trainee walks to the towbar head at the nose gear dummy, pulls out the safety pin to unlock the mechanism, and lifts the locking lever to open it.
  • The trainee reinserts the safety pin. He then lowers the towbar slightly, to disengage it from the tow fitting, and pushes the towbar forward away form the nose gear dummy.
  • The lesson concludes with the trainee returning to the nose gear dummy and removing the steering bypass pin, restoring the steering system.

Safety Scenarios & Learnings
