Description

This lesson provides a free-practice area where trainees maneuver the pushback tractor with towbar attached through a cone course, without an aircraft connected. Trainees navigate the exact route, avoid hitting cones, and park precisely in the target zone, building steering confidence with the counter-intuitive towbar steering system. The focus is on developing steering precision and spatial awareness in a low-pressure environment before tackling full pushback maneuvers.

Lesson Overview

  1. 1Introduction to the cone course layout and the steering mechanics with towbar attached
  2. 2Navigate the exact route through the cones and park in the target zone
  3. 3Optional steering guidance available via the menu at any time
  4. 4Unlimited attempts with immediate restarts to build muscle memory

Skills Acquired

  • Maneuver the pushback tractor with towbar through tight turns to build steering confidence
  • Apply counter-intuitive towbar steering inputs to navigate a defined route
  • Develop spatial awareness of towbar position and swing radius to avoid obstacles
  • Build precision and control before progressing to full pushback maneuvers with an aircraft

Lesson Procedure

  • The trainee starts seated in the tractor with the towbar attached. A brief introduction shows the cone course layout and explains the rules: follow the exact route, avoid cones, and park in the target zone.
  • The menu system is introduced, allowing the trainee to restart at any time or enable optional steering guidance.
  • A steering reminder explains that with just the towbar attached, steering works like reversing with a trailer — turning right makes the towbar swing left.
  • The trainee drives through the cone course. Each cone hit is counted as an error. Driving outside the practice area or jackknifing triggers a rewind.
  • At the end of each attempt, performance is evaluated based on cones hit and path accuracy. The trainee can immediately restart and practice as many times as needed.

Safety Scenarios & Learnings

Learning Outcome

Rewind; demonstrates that excessive steering angle causes loss of control

Learning Outcome

Rewind; reinforces maintaining awareness of towbar position and swing radius
