Description

This lesson trains the precise positioning of towable passenger stairs at an aircraft door. Trainees practice approaching the aircraft, aligning the stairs, and securing the unit for safe passenger boarding and disembarking. The focus is on controlled movement, accurate height adjustment, and adherence to no-touch safety policy in a live apron environment.

Lesson Overview

  1. 1Select the correct parking position for the towable stairs
  2. 2Push and align the stairs manually toward the aircraft door
  3. 3Raise and fine-adjust the platform to correct boarding height
  4. 4Pull the unit into final position and secure it at the door
  5. 5Extend stabilizer jacks and lock the towbar to complete the procedure

Skills Acquired

  • Position towable stairs safely and accurately at an aircraft door
  • Control manual movement and hydraulic adjustment with precision
  • Align the towable stairs platform to the correct height without contacting the aircraft fuselage
  • Stabilize and secure the unit using proper locking and support procedures
  • Apply apron safety discipline and compliance with the no-touch policy

Lesson Procedure

  • The trainee begins between the Equipment Restraint Area (ERA) and a tractor towing the towable stairs, positioned about ten meters from the aircraft.
  • They are presented with three parking options to choose from; the corrplaces the towable stairs in line with the aircraft door, just outside the ERA.
  • Once detached from the tractor, the trainee pushes the stairs forward in a straight line using the towbar, stopping approximately one meter from the fuselage.
  • The platform is raised by pumping the lift handle to a target height slightly below the aircraft door; a height indicator and short confirmation cue mark success.
  • Standing at the front, the trainee uses the hydraulic cylinder to pull the stairs into final position. A proximity indicator ensures a safe five-centimeter gap, followed by an animation confirming alignment.
  • The trainee then fine-adjusts and secures the platform, raising it to roughly ten centimeter below the door step and locking it in place, confirmed by an audible click and visual cue.
  • Stabilizer jacks are extended fully by turning the selector and pumping the handle until full extension is reached.
  • Finally, the towbar is lifted and locked into its latch, completing the procedure with a short securing animation before the lesson ends with a summary confirming stability and no-touch compliance.

Safety Scenarios & Learnings

Learning Outcome

Triggers correction, emphasizing that equipment must never enter the protected zone before manual positioning.

Learning Outcome

Shows crash visual effect and restarts, demonstrating the severity of any aircraft contact.

Learning Outcome

Prompts corrective guidance to lower it again, teaching controlled pump operation.

Learning Outcome

Red error and rewind, reinforcing the habit of locking after height adjustment.

Learning Outcome

Continuous warning until completion, emphasizing full stabilization before operation.
